The start…

After a public meeting in late 2004, it was decided to launch a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme across the whole of Telegraph Hill.

What is a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme?
There is no specific model so it can be flexible according to what communities want and need. The official kit supplied by the police defines it as "a method of developing close liaison between households in a neighbourhood, the local police and the local authority. The aim is to help people protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve their local environment by: improved home security, greater vigilance, fostering a community spirit, improving their environment".

What can it do?
The scheme members themselves determine its activities. Examples of activities might include: lobbying the council/police for extra resources, communicating community concerns to the authorities, logging incidents to build up a better picture of what is happening where, educating people about security/safety etc, liasing with schools and colleges to discuss safety issues, running local events to promote awareness.
